How to Choose a CFO Resume Writer in Australia and New Zealand (and What to Avoid)
Finance leaders are careful buyers. You read the fine print, test the assumptions and ask where the numbers come from. Yet when it comes to choosing someone to write their resume, many CFOs and senior finance leaders make the decision on a website, a price and a gut feel.
That is understandable. Most people only buy an executive resume a few times in their career, and it is hard to judge quality before you see the finished document. But the choice matters. A CFO resume is not a general executive resume with finance words added. It has to show level, commercial judgement and governance in a way that a search consultant, a CEO and a board audit committee chair will each recognise. A writer who does not understand how finance leaders are assessed will struggle to do that, however well they write.
Here is how to choose well, and what to avoid.
Start with how finance leaders are assessed
Before you look at any provider, remind yourself what your resume has to do. For a CFO or senior finance role, the people reading it are looking for a few specific things:
Your level and scope, shown clearly enough that they can compare you with other candidates
Commercial influence, not just financial control
Results with context: the size of the problem, what you did and what changed
Governance and board exposure
Fit with the brief, whether it is turnaround, growth, private equity or listed
A good CFO resume writer should talk to you about all of these without being prompted. If they do not, they may not know what the reader is looking for. Our guide to what boards and CEOs expect on a CFO resume sets this out in more detail.
What to look for in a CFO resume writer
Finance and recruitment experience. The most useful background is someone who has worked in finance recruitment or executive search, or who has worked closely with senior finance leaders for many years. They will know how finance titles vary, how consultants compare candidates and what makes a panel nervous.
A real conversation. Your resume should be built from a detailed discussion of your career, not only a questionnaire. Ask how long the initial consultation runs and who conducts it. The best insights usually come from follow-up questions a form cannot ask.
The writer is the person you speak to. Many services use a sales consultant for the first call and pass the work to a writer you never meet. That can work for simpler careers. For a CFO, context is easily lost in the handover. Ask who will write your resume and whether you will speak with them directly.
Positioning, not just writing. Ask how they will position you for your target roles. Can they explain how your resume would differ for a PE-backed CFO role versus a listed company? If they talk mainly about formatting, keywords and design, they may be focused on the wrong problem.
A sensible approach to confidentiality. Finance leaders often work with sensitive information. A good writer will know how to show commercial results without disclosing confidential numbers and will handle your information carefully.
Clear inclusions and process. You should know exactly what you are getting, how long it takes, how revisions work and what happens if you need changes once you start applying.
Questions to ask before you commit
Here are the questions I would ask if I were choosing a writer for my own CFO resume:
What experience do you have with CFO and senior finance careers?
Have you worked in recruitment or executive search?
Who will write my resume, and will I speak with them?
How do you learn about my career and results?
How would you position me for the type of CFO role I am targeting?
How do you handle confidential financial information?
Does the service include LinkedIn, a board resume or interview preparation?
What is included in the price, and what costs extra?
How are revisions handled, and for how long?
Can I see examples or speak with past clients?
A strong provider will welcome these questions and answer them directly.
The red flags
Some warning signs are worth taking seriously.
Guaranteed interviews or salary increases. No one can guarantee what a market will do. Promises of interviews, specific salaries or job offers should make you cautious.
No finance knowledge. If the writer does not understand the difference between a Financial Controller and a Group CFO, or asks what EBITDA stands for, they will struggle to position you accurately.
Template output. Look closely at examples. If they all look and sound the same, your resume will too. Template resumes rarely work at senior level, and a finance panel will notice.
Keyword stuffing. Some services focus heavily on applicant tracking systems and fill resumes with keywords. For CFO roles, most shortlists are made by people, not software. Clarity matters far more than keyword density.
Very fast turnaround with no conversation. A strong CFO resume usually takes time, because the positioning work takes time. A promise of a finished executive document in a day or two with no discussion is a warning sign.
Pressure to buy the biggest package. A good provider will recommend what you need, not the most they can sell.
Price and value
CFO resume services vary widely in price. As a rough guide, published executive prices in Australia start from around $2,500, specialist services often quote after an initial conversation, and lower-cost services exist but tend to produce generic documents. We break down what drives the cost in how much an executive resume costs in Australia and New Zealand.
The useful question is not what it costs, but what a better outcome is worth. For a finance leader, a stronger position in a single negotiation, or one month less between roles, can outweigh the cost of the service many times over. Equally, if your career is straightforward and your target is clear, you may not need a specialist at all.
Consider the market you are targeting
If you are targeting roles in New Zealand, or moving between Australia and New Zealand, choose a writer who understands both markets. The expectations differ in small but important ways, from language and structure to how scale and breadth are read. Our guide to what New Zealand hiring panels expect explains the differences.
If you are heading towards board roles, check whether the writer also prepares board resumes and biographies, and whether they understand how chairs and nomination committees read finance candidates.
What a good first conversation feels like
You can tell a lot from the first conversation. A strong CFO resume writer will ask about your target before your history. They will want to know the size and shape of each business, what you were brought in to do and what changed. They will ask about your reporting line, your board exposure and the commercial decisions you influenced. And they will challenge you gently when your description of a role is vague.
By the end of the call, you should feel that they understand how the market is likely to read you, and that they have a view on how to improve it. If you finish the conversation having done most of the talking about formatting and fonts, you are probably speaking with the wrong provider.
When to walk away
Walk away if you are pushed to decide on the call, if the provider cannot tell you who will write your resume, if they promise outcomes they cannot control or if they seem more interested in selling a package than understanding your situation. A CFO resume is an important investment in your next move. You are entitled to take your time and choose someone you trust.
How I work with finance leaders
I spent more than twenty years in executive recruitment, much of it across accounting and finance, before starting Belinda Paris Coaching in 2015. I write every resume myself, starting with a detailed conversation about your career, your target and how the market is likely to read you. The work covers your resume, LinkedIn profile and positioning, and for some clients extends to board documents, interview preparation and support through a search.
Whoever you choose, choose someone who understands how finance leaders are assessed. That is where the value is.
