Executive Jobs in Perth and WA: Resources, Energy and Finance Roles

September 29, 2026•8 min read

Perth is one of the most distinctive executive markets in Australia. It is a long way from Sydney and Melbourne, it runs on a different clock, and a large share of its senior roles are tied to resources and energy. For a CFO or finance leader, that brings real opportunity and a few traps.

If you are searching for executive jobs Perth employers are trying to fill, the short answer is this. Most senior roles in WA sit in or around mining, oil and gas, energy, mining services and engineering, with a solid layer of government, health, education and professional services roles alongside them. Many are filled through networks and search firms before an advertisement ever appears. Relationships in the local market often matter as much as your resume.

From my years in executive recruitment, I saw strong east coast candidates underestimate how different Perth is. They applied as if it were just another capital city. Here is how the market works, what employers look for and how to position yourself.

Where are the executive jobs Perth employers are hiring for?

The Perth market is shaped by the state’s economy. That means a heavy weight towards a few sectors.

Mining and resources. Iron ore, gold, lithium, nickel and other minerals drive a large part of WA’s economy. Many listed and private resources companies have their head office or a major office in Perth, from small explorers to large producers.

Oil, gas and energy. Offshore gas, LNG and related infrastructure create senior roles in operations, projects, commercial and finance. The energy transition is adding renewables, hydrogen and battery minerals to the mix.

Mining services and engineering. Contractors, equipment suppliers, drilling, logistics and engineering firms employ a large number of senior leaders. These businesses often ride the same cycle as their clients.

Government and public sector. The WA state government, local councils and government trading enterprises in areas such as water, energy and ports all hire executives.

Health, education and not-for-profit. Hospitals, universities, aged care and community organisations offer senior roles with different pressures and more stable demand.

Professional services and finance. Accounting firms, law firms, advisory firms, banks and funds support the resources sector and the wider economy.

What finance leaders do in WA resources and energy

Finance roles in resources and energy are not the same as finance roles in retail or professional services. Employers in this sector often look for specific experience.

  • Capital projects. Large, long-term projects need tight capital expenditure control, project reporting and strong links with engineering teams.

  • Joint ventures. Many assets are held in joint ventures, which means JV accounting, cash calls and partner reporting.

  • Commodity and currency exposure. Revenue can swing with prices and exchange rates, so treasury, hedging and scenario planning matter.

  • Funding. Explorers and developers often need equity raisings, debt or project finance to move a project forward.

  • Royalties, tax and compliance. Resources businesses carry their own reporting and regulatory load.

  • Operations support. Site-level cost control and working with operations leaders who think in tonnes, grades and uptime.

If you have this experience, put it near the top of your resume. If you do not, show the closest equivalent, such as large capex programs, multi-party arrangements or businesses exposed to price swings. Our guide to changing industries as a CFO covers how to frame transferable experience.

How senior roles in Perth are usually filled

Executive roles in Perth are filled in the same broad ways as elsewhere, but the balance is different.

Networks and referrals. Perth’s senior business community is relatively small. Many executives have worked together, sat on the same boards or met through industry groups. When a role opens, the first question is often “who do we know?” Our piece on the hidden job market for executive roles explains how this works.

Search firms. Retained and contingent search firms with a Perth presence handle many CFO, COO and general manager roles. Some specialise in resources and energy. Consultants with deep local networks often know about roles well before they are public.

Advertised roles. Government, health, education and some private sector roles are advertised. Applications still matter, but they are only one route.

This means your visibility in the local market counts. Many executive jobs Perth companies fill are never advertised. If the people making calls in Perth do not know you, you are relying on the smallest part of the market.

The FIFO factor

Some senior roles in WA involve fly-in fly-out (FIFO) or drive-in drive-out work. This is more common for site-based general managers, operations leaders and some commercial roles than for head office finance roles.

A Perth-based CFO may still spend regular time on site, reviewing costs and projects with site leaders.

If a role has a FIFO element, ask early about the roster, travel expectations and how much time is spent on site. Be clear about what you and your family can manage. A mismatch here is one of the fastest ways to make a new role fail.

Distance from the east coast

Perth is closer to parts of Asia than to Sydney. That distance shapes the market in a few ways.

Time zones. Perth sits two or three hours behind the east coast, depending on the time of year. If you report to a board or parent company in Sydney or Melbourne, your working day may start early or run late.

Head office roles. Some national businesses run their WA operations as a division, with the CFO based on the east coast. That can mean a Perth role is a divisional or regional finance role rather than a full CFO role.

Travel. Senior roles often involve regular flights east, and sometimes to Asia, Africa or other regions where resources companies operate.

Relocating to Perth

Many candidates look at Perth from the east coast or New Zealand. Employers are often open to this, but they have been burnt before.

The main concern is retention. A hiring panel may worry that you will take the job, find the distance hard and head home within two years. You can reduce that concern by being clear about why Perth, why now and what ties you to the city.

Before and after (illustrative). Here is an illustrative example of how a candidate might explain a move.

Before: “I am open to relocating to Perth for the right opportunity.”

After: “My partner is from Perth and we have family there. We have planned the move for next year, when our youngest finishes school. I am looking for a CFO role in resources or mining services, where my background in capital projects and joint ventures is most useful.”

The second version answers the question the panel is really asking. It gives a reason, a timeline and a clear target. Our guide to regional and interstate executive roles covers how employers weigh up relocating candidates.

What Perth employers look for in senior leaders

Beyond sector skills, a pattern I see often is that Perth employers look for a few things in particular.

  • Comfort with cycles. Resources markets move in booms and downturns. Employers want leaders who have managed growth and cut costs when prices fall.

  • Practical, hands-on style. Many WA businesses are lean at the top. Senior leaders are expected to get into detail when needed.

  • Credibility with operations. Finance leaders who can talk with site managers and engineers are valued.

  • Capital markets exposure. For listed companies, experience with investors, boards and funding rounds is a strong point.

Common mistakes in the Perth executive market

Treating Perth like the east coast. Applying through job boards alone, without building local contacts, leaves you relying on the smallest slice of the market.

Ignoring the cycle. Timing matters. When commodity prices are strong, hiring increases. When they fall, some roles disappear quickly. Watch the sector news.

Hiding resources experience. Candidates sometimes bury site or project experience because they think it looks too operational. In WA, it is often your strongest selling point.

Vague relocation plans. “Open to relocating” is not enough. Be specific about why and when.

Not using search firms well. Local consultants can be your best source of market insight. Our piece on working with executive recruiters covers how to build a useful relationship.

Practical steps for your Perth search

  1. Map the market. List the organisations in your target sectors that have senior finance or leadership roles in Perth.

  2. Update your resume for WA. Lead with resources, energy, projects or capital experience where you have it.

  3. Align your LinkedIn profile. Make your location, sector and target roles clear so local search consultants can find you.

  4. Reach out to your network. Contact former colleagues, board members and advisers with Perth links. Ask for insight, not a job.

  5. Meet the local search firms. Identify two or three that recruit at your level in your sectors.

  6. Plan your relocation story. If you are not yet in Perth, prepare a clear, honest explanation.

Questions to ask yourself before you start

  • Can I explain in one sentence why a Perth employer should hire me?

  • Is my resources, energy or capital projects experience easy to find?

  • Do I know which search firms handle roles at my level in Perth?

  • How many senior people in Perth know who I am and what I want?

  • Am I prepared for the time zone, travel and possible site visits?

  • If I am relocating, can I explain why, when and what keeps me there?

If you answer no to any of these, start there.

Build your place in the Perth market

The best executive jobs Perth has to offer go to leaders who understand its sectors, respect its networks and commit to the city. Your resume needs to show relevant experience clearly. But the real work is building relationships with the people who fill senior roles in WA. Start early, stay visible and be clear about what you offer.
